In honour of ‘Back British Farming Day’ this September, we’ve got a 35-page special dedicated to the oldest and greatest industry in the world: farming. NFU President Tom Bradshaw gives his view of how the sector is delivering for the nation and we’ve also conducted a voxpops with a diverse bunch of British farmers – from flower farmers in Buckinghamshire to Highland sheep farmers – and what’s striking is both the determination to keep doing the job against all the odds, but the passion and enjoyment at doing something incredibly fulfilling. Elsewhere in this special focus, we looking at how mechanisation has changed the industry, the wonder that’s British wool, and the work to educate the next generation about the value of food and farming. Later in the edition, dog expert Carolyn Menteith poses a tricky question: “Should I get a dog?” In the wake of the pandemic, there’s reportedly 4.5 million more dogs in UK households – bringing the number to some 13.5 million dogs in total. She argues that people shouldn’t underestimate the fact that a dog will fundamentally change your life – from home to work to travel. It’s a challenging and thought-provoking column. |
